AML Treatment

AML Treatment begins with the first stage of chemotherapy known as induction. The purpose of which is to reduce the number of leukemic cells to an undetectable level.

"Although the world is full of suffering,
it is also full of the overcoming of it."

Helen Keller

The second stage of chemotherapy is known as postremission or consolidation therapy and is used to remove any remaining leukemic cells thus achieving a cured state.

After induction chemotherapy a state of remission may be achieved. This state of remission means that no trace of leukemic cells are detectable with current technology. Patients must still undergo the postremission chemotherapy treatments or risk relapsing.

Due to the side effects of chemotherapy a person may require hospitalization as the risk of contracting an infection increases.

If a patient has a high risk of leukemia relapse it may be necessary to consider stem cell transplantation.

A stem cell transplant is the infusion of healthy stem cells for the purpose of repopulating the bone marrow and producing new healthy blood cells.
