Fibromatosis

Fibromatosis is a type of benign soft tissue tumor with aggressive growth habits. Currently there seems to be no relation between Carin's Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia and this collection of tumors.

"Optimism is essential to achievement:
it is the foundation of courage and progress."

Nicholas Murray Butler

Carin's tumor could be classified as a "desmoid tumor" which specifically refers to the occurrence of a tumor in the abdominal wall.

Fibromatosis tumors are considered cancerous in the way that they are aggressively growing masses but they do not metastasize.

Carin's tumors were first discovered as the result of a near death experience. In November of 2004, she was babysitting her nephew and nieces. She had been experiencing abdominal pain all day but hadn't thought that it was very serious. While babysitting, her pain became unbearable and she made the decision to call 911.

Carin was unable to complete the call and fortunately her niece went into action for Carin.

Later, at the hospital, the doctors made a decision to perform exploratory surgery. What they discovered was the following...

Carin had an undetected Fibromatosis tumor the size of a grapefruit which had "dried up" and "split open." When her tumor opened up it caused some major blood vessels to tear open and she was bleeding heavily internally. The discovery was made and without another minute to spare the doctors performed an emergency excision of the tumor.

The removal of the tumor had to include the removal of part of her stomach, a portion of bowel, a portion of her pancreas and her spleen.

Carin has since had radiation therapy and been put on a medicinal regimen as a means of controlling the remaining tumors. We are very happy to report that her latest C.T. scan stated, "The previously seen 7.5 cm large mesenteric mass has completely resolved!" Hallelujah!

Her original prescription for the treatment of her tumors was a drug called Tamoxifen. She was soon taken off this medication due to causing Carin's extreme depression. Her oncologist has recently discovered another patient that experienced extreme depression due to this same prescription.

Carin now takes Megestrol which seems to have no negative affect on her.
